Summer Language Study

Summer Quad

While students in the Master of Arts Program in the Humanities (MAPH) can take language courses during the academic year, it can be beneficial to instead complete intensive language study over the summer through the University of Chicago’s Summer Language Institute (SLI) and Academic and Professional Reading Institute (APRI). Students can participate in an SLI or APRI program before they begin MAPH or after they have graduated. SLI or APRI coursework cannot be counted towards the MAPH degree.

Summer Language Institute (SLI)

The Summer Language Institute (SLI) allows students to learn an entire year of a language online over the summer. Students have the opportunity to take modern or ancient language courses. Beginning and intermediate intensive language courses are designed for students wishing to develop proficiency across all four language skills—speaking, listening, reading, and writing. The SLI currently offers the following language intensives:

Ancient GreekArabic
FrenchGerman
JapaneseSpanish

MAPH students receive a tuition discount on SLI courses, and the final cost is $4,113 for the 300-unit intensives. Students who wish to take an SLI course before beginning MAPH should email Annie Williams (aewilliams@uchicago.edu) for more information.

Academic and Professional Reading Institute (APRI)

The Academic and Professional Reading Institute (APRI) enables students to proficiently read and integrate secondary research literature into their work, meeting critical graduate requirements and job-specific duties. The APRI currently offers the following languages:

ArabicChineseFrenchGerman
HebrewItalianJapaneseKorean
PersianRussianSpanishTurkish

The registration fee for each individual reading seminar is $1,500. Students who wish to take an APRI course before beginning MAPH should email Annie Williams (aewilliams@uchicago.edu) for more information.
