International applicants to the Master of Arts Program in the Humanities (MAPH) may be required to submit a TOEFL or IELTS score in order to complete their application. Additionally, some students may choose to participate in the University of Chicago’s Academic English Pre-Matriculation Program that takes place the summer before the MAPH year.

English Language Policy

All applicants for whom English is not a primary language may be required to submit current scores from the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or the International English Language Testing System (IELTS). Current scores are no more than two years old at the time of application submission. Required minimum scores can be found here, and a complete description of the English proficiency policy may be found at this website. Questions about the English proficiency requirement should be directed to humanitiesadmissions@uchicago.edu.
