MAPH alumni go on to a wide variety of professions – teaching, non-profit administration, museum curation, technical writing, and academic publishing, to name a few. In order to best prepare our students for entering or returning to a career, we offer many professional learning opportunities throughout the MAPH year. Even if students are applying to a PhD, we encourage them to attend our career programming to enhance their professional academic and networking skills.
- UChicago Grad Career fairs with over 500 employers in the fall and spring quarters.
- A fall quarter Alumni Career Night where MAPH alumni return to campus to speak about their career trajectories.
- Regular career events throughout the year that help students build toward the applications they may submit in spring.
- Resume and cover letter workshops.
- Access to a list of over 100 alumni mentors who are willing to be contacted about their careers.
- Students in their final quarter and MAPH Alumni receive weekly jobs emails with 30-40 professional opportunities curated by MAPH’s Associate Director.

"I am happily spending the summer as the Grants and Awards Intern at the Poetry Foundation. I've done a bunch of data analysis to help PF improve their Grants Program, which has committed $9 million over three years to supporting literary non-profits, presses, educational programs, and journals that celebrate and engage with poetry" - Marta Lasota, '23
MAPH Mentorships
Two MAPH graduates are hired every spring to work during the following academic year as MAPH Mentors. Mentors act as informal advisors for the current class of MAPH students and work to help foster community by organizing a variety of social, cultural, and career events. Events such as the outings to museums and concerts, the works in progress conference, and weekly social hours to name a few. They manage the social media accounts profiling current student events and the life of the program.
Because MAPH Mentors have just completed the program, they serve as invaluable advisors. They help students pick courses, find thesis advisors, and write resumes while also fulfilling less formal advising roles about life and culture at the University of Chicago and in Chicago. They also are a primary point of contact for prospective students during admissions and recruitments sharing their experience of the program.
They also serve as co-editors of the MAPH journal, Common Forms. This gives the mentors valuable experience in academic administration and editorial work.
