Events

MAPH hosts a variety of special events throughout the year that are always open to all MAPH students, and sometimes open to all of UChicago, including talks, workshops, and recreational activities. Please see below for any upcoming MAPH events!

MAPH Alum Lara Ehrlich - New Book Talk with Q&A (October 9th, 5:00PM, Classics 110)

Flyer featuring Lara Ehrlich and the cover of her new book, 'Bind Me Tighter Still,' which features a mermaid in a standing position bound with ropes.

UChicago MAPH alumnus Lara Ehrlich is the author of Animal Wife (winner of the Red Hen Press Fiction Award) and the forthcoming novel Bind Me Tighter Still (Red Hen Press, Sept. 2025). She is the founder of the ‘Writer Mother Monster’ podcast and the Thought Fox Writers Den, a creative writing center in Connecticut. Lara’s work blends personal storytelling with cultural critique, subjects she also regularly engages in public talks and workshops.

Lara’s upcoming novel is Bind Me Tighter Still, a subversive feminist novel of mermaids, myth, and the pursuit of control in a world built on spectacle. Walking the dangerous line between empowerment and entrapment, Bind Me Tighter Still explores power and hunger, sacrifice and motherhood, and celebrates the fierceness of female strength in a male-dominated world.

Please join us on October 9th at 5:00PM in Classics 110 for a discussion and Q&A with Lara about her book and career as an author and speaker in her time since leaving the UChicago MAPH program. This is a public event, and light snacks and drinks will be served!
