From the Directors

We’re delighted you’re taking a look at the University of Chicago’s Master of Arts Program in the Humanities, which we call MAPH. MAPH is an intensive one-year Masters program that allows students to do rigorous research in the fields of their choice or to pursue innovative interdisciplinary projects, both under the guidance of the extraordinary faculty of the Humanities and the other graduate Divisions here at Chicago. Our students take eight classes (seven of which are electives chosen from among the graduate course offerings across this university) and write a thesis in the course of a single academic year. That gives you a sense of the intensity, focus and outstanding preparation for doctoral work and professional possibility our program offers. It’s just as important to us, however, that MAPH is a home for creative thought and practice, for innovative thinking about the place of the humanities beyond the academy, and that MAPH fosters community and connection among our amazing students and alumni.

Our program offers participation in rigorous intellectual work at the highest level as well as active support for professional and career exploration of all kinds. Our students engage in intensive humanistic inquiry from a secure home base of guidance, support and genuine communal life. Our website gives you a great deal of information about MAPH. We’d particularly like to encourage you to look at the profiles of some of our alumni to get a sense of who we are, what we do, and why we are so proud of this program and our students. Please don’t hesitate to contact us with any questions that arise.
